Standard Background and International Positioning
🌍 UNESCO’s “Greening Education Partnership” (GEP) was launched by the UN Secretary-General at the Transforming Education Summit in 2022, aiming to address the climate crisis through education, with the goal of greening at least 50% of schools in all countries by 2030.
🏅 In April 2026, the UNESCO Hong Kong Association was officially recognised by UNESCO as a GEP member institution and an accredited certification body, launching the implementation of green school certification in Hong Kong. Certified Hong Kong schools will be formally included in UNESCO’s “Greening Education Partnership” global network and dashboard, contributing to the global green school goal and demonstrating Hong Kong schools’ green leadership.
How to Obtain the Certification
📋 The “Net Zero School Project” offers three levels of participation, flexibly accommodating the sustainable development progress of different schools:
1️⃣ Commitment Level
Suitable for schools that are just starting out. After completing the preliminary assessment, schools will receive the “Towards Net Zero School Assessment Certificate” and expert recommendations to provide guidance for the next steps.
2️⃣ Progression Level
Suitable for schools that have completed a carbon audit report. Schools can directly undergo assessment against the Standard and, based on their performance, be certified as a “Net Zero Participation School” or “Net Zero Demonstration School”.
3️⃣ Advanced Level
Suitable for schools seeking comprehensive support. The project covers workshops, training, carbon audits and consultation services, assisting schools in ultimately obtaining “Net Zero Demonstration School” certification.
🚩 Outlook
The official announcement of the Panel of Judges marks the entry of Hong Kong’s green school certification system into the stage of substantive operation. In the future, the “Net Zero School Project” will continue to expand to more primary and secondary schools, and through teacher training, student carbon accounting teams, cross-school exchanges and community engagement, further deepen climate action from campus to community, nurturing future green sustainable talents, and jointly contributing to international and local carbon neutrality goals.
